Dear Friends,

I feel like I’m living on a high wire these days, suspended between familiar panic and the welcome shock of new hope. Canada’s climate is warming at twice the global rate. The world’s top climate scientists say we have just 11 years to slash our emissions in half to avoid millions more people facing famine, poverty and other climate-driven catastrophes. And yet: suddenly, thousands upon thousands of high school students are marching out of class to protest austerity and demand climate justice. In the U.S., electrifying new politicians like Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are telling the truth about empire, corruption, and proposing solutions – like the Green New Deal – that would actually solve the epic and overlapping crises we all face.

I’ll be honest – I’ve never been an electoral partisan. In fact, I very rarely endorse candidates or get involved in elections. But if we really have 11 years left to pull off “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society,” then we are going to need politicians in office immediately who grasp the depth and scale of our current crises, and are unapologetic about proposing radical policies to literally change everything and get our society off its current, disastrous course.

That’s why I’m writing you today to urge you to buy an NDP membership so you can support Min Sook Lee in her bid to be the NDP candidate in Toronto-Danforth.

We need new voices in the debate, new faces on our screens – especially people who come out of social movements, grounded in the reality of community struggle, who have shown their commitment to those most excluded from the luxuries of our economy.

I’ve known Min Sook for three decades – since we worked together in student journalism at U of T. She is an artist of deep integrity and tremendous talent, who has put those qualities at the service of migrant justice and other critical social movement struggles. Min Sook is exactly the kind of person whom we rarely see in electoral politics, and desperately need to be roaming the halls of power, finding other insurgent newcomers, and building coalitions with outside forces to shift our politics at the speed required to confront existential crises and mobilize for transformative change!

So, yeah, this is a heartfelt endorsement of Min Sook as the NDP nominee in Toronto-Danforth. But it’s more than that. Before Min Sook can become a Member of Parliament, she has to win the NDP nomination. And that means getting hundreds of people to join the NDP (or renew their memberships). Another confession: buying a party membership is not something that I usually get excited about. But if I lived in Toronto-Danforth, and I had a chance to directly support Min Sook’s inspiring entry into politics? I’d buy one in a heartbeat, and urge all my friends to do the same.

Which is why I’m writing this letter. The deadline for buying or renewing memberships is coming up fast – so don’t delay. Buy a membership here, or reply to this email and a member of Min Sook’s team will be in touch.

in solidarity and hope,

Naomi Klein
